So that’s 43 credits towards 124. 20 at least will be language. So I have roughly 20 classes to suss out the details of the major. People have made a few comments to me that people who graduate with art history degrees don’t work in art, people who graduate with film degrees aren’t working in film. And I find this all rather un-encouraging.
Writing is something I will explore but I am still having a hard time committing to anything. Only because it does seem that schooling is not a necessity for success in it. I want to travel and do something fun. I would have loved to be a vet but I am not a math genius and who will take care of me for the next ten years while I get it done. I would have to move to Colorado or somewhere where they had a great program (all in all not a terrible idea), or get a house in Jersey and commute to Trenton.
I will just keep this as a happy reminder to myself that these are grades you get when you put little effort in and mess around a lot. I will have to make sure I don’t do this to myself again so I can get all A’s and up the GPA a ton.

Those are some great grades! You should be super proud of all you’ve accomplished…even just from where you were a year, two years, three years ago, etc.
Congrats!!!

Thanks Miss Tara. I am proud. I just know I could do so much better is all. I want to graduate with a 4.0 or a 3.92345 or something equally as ridiculous but not below a 3.6.
🙂

Ignore these people. Everyone who works hard and pursues what they love DOES eventually find a good job. Not always the one they expected to have, but 98% of the time a good one and one they are happy with.

Also, I agree with Tara: you should be proud of that GPA. It’s not bad at all—far from it, it’s very respectable.

Ugh. ties are “respectable” as are briefcases. I find no use for either.
i want a rockstar grade. I WILL find a way to get it.
Thanks for commenting frAncinnamon. 🙂

Well I graduated with a GPA of 3.14 and frankly I’m proud of that so you should be proud of yours. Also, study what you want, if I could go back I would have chosen a different major. I’m just hoping I can somehow apply my business degree into a job within the film industry, that would be my ultimate dream right now. I know a few people that have art or film degrees, some work in their industry, some do not, the ones that don’t have either given up(after little or no effort) or settled into something else, don’t let it stop you from pursuing your goals.

I know about the major thing. I am petrified to invest the time, the debt, and the future anxiousness to something I could potentially hate. It would suck lots.
I still dream. and I will do something in film eventually, if not just a screenplay I sell…

it was so great to see you last night 🙂
those are great grades and you should be really proud!
i know one person who has a film degree and he ended up working in publicity/marketing (can’t remember which) for a film company. hated it – not enough money etc though it sounded fun to go to huge festivals as a non-journo! – and ended up quitting and moving away. BUT that said, i think it would be fun. it’s debatable if film criticism is still “necessary” but i don’t know enough about that argument to say either way. it’s mostly a debate that’s a circle jerk among crits 🙂 in any case, go for what you want.

no kidding!
We need to hang out more than once or twice a year!
It’s funny–my film professor said quite the opposite. He spoke a lot about how film will dictate the new language in how people speak and think and look at things. With the infection of things like youtube and camera phones…I’d tend to believe him. It all started with the digital camera and everyone thinking they could be a photographer (which was disproven of course). Spike Lee is actually sponsoring something where everyone is sending him video clips taken from cell phones and he is going to accumulate them into a film.
I find the whole idea of film so interesting because as a media, it has not been around as long as any other art form. But it also works in much the same manner as every other art form, reflecting the social, political and personal concerns of a population. Sometimes when I read a screenplay or see a movie, it’s much easier for me to be like “I wish I did that!” Film is one of the only art forms to me which has not been completely explored and there is still so much to do…

congrats on the good grades, seriously. it’s a lot more difficult to focus on getting amazing grades when you’re doing other things in the real world.
as for what people say about what you major in…it really doesn’t matter. take the classes in what you want to learn about. i studied art and i work in film and i don’t think that means i did the wrong thing necessarily (even though i wish i had taken more film classes). the moral of what i’m trying to say is it doesn’t matter what you chose, just take advantage of the classes you’re interested in. a major is not a curse, it’s just a way for them to make guidelines for you, but you can always just work around that. do what you care about and you’ll end up where you want to be.
